Getting Your Little One Ready for 1st Grade: A Mama’s Guide

Oh, mama, can you believe it? Your sweet baby is about to start 1st grade. Cue the tears (yours, not theirs). This is such a big step, and I know you just want them to walk in that classroom feeling confident and ready. Here are a few tried and true tips from one mom to another on how to get them prepared without making it stressful.

First, let’s talk basics, like reading, writing, and numbers. You don’t need fancy workbooks or a degree in education. Just read with them every day. Snuggle up and let them practice sounding out words, and talk about the story as you go. Point out letters and words on signs at the grocery store or when you are driving. Make it fun. Same with numbers. Have them count silverware as they set the table or help you measure while baking cookies.

Next, practice some big kid skills. Can they open their own lunchbox and zip their backpack? Wipe their own face? Ask for help when they need it? First grade teachers love when kids are a little more independent. A few weeks before school starts, practice those morning and bedtime routines so everyone is ready when that alarm clock starts ringing.

And do not forget the emotional part. Talk about how exciting it is to make new friends, and also reassure them that it is okay to feel nervous. Role play what to say if they need help or feel shy. Remind them that you are proud of them no matter what.

Mama, you’ve got this, and so do they. With a little love, a little practice, and a lot of hugs, your kiddo will be ready to shine in 1st grade.
